Week 11: READ AN ENTIRE BOOK IN ONE WEEK

I love to read. I used to devour books. But between the stack of untouched magazines, my Google reader filled with unread blog posts, and of course my duties as a domestic engineer, reading books has dropped down to the bottom slot on my to-do list.

This week I am challenging myself to read an entire book. In one week. That may mean turning the tv off one night or prying myself away from the computer, but I need to return to that world of make-believe that appears whenever I dive into a good novel.

Any suggestions for a good (quick) read?

  1. Hi there, I know what you mean about finding time to read with all our other 'chores'. I do enjoy reading, "Nora Roberts". I like her fiction better than her romance novels. I have also started to read her mystery series under to psudonym of, "J.D. Roberts. Good luck!

  2. You might try the Lineage of Grace novellas by Francine Rivers. I bet you could knock through the entire series in a week. The books are small but pack a punch and at least one will make you cry, guaranteed!

  3. What sort of books do you like to read? I don't especially like mystery novels but recently read some really good ones including The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – if you like it as much as I did you will not want to put it down! Others I really enjoyed recently were Tana French's In The Woods and Sophie Hannah's Little Face (The Wrong Mother is also good). If you like short stories with a difference then try Elizabeth Strout's Olive Kitteridge or for something completely different and very sweet try The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Schaffer. I could go on but had better not!

  4. I don't have a book recommendation, but I find checking books out from the library the best way to force me to read a book in a limited amount of time.

  5. I second Aging Mommy on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I have that and the 2nd book- The Girl Who Played With Fire. I devoured both of them very quickly- they are hard to put down. Have you read any of the Sookie Stackhouse books yet (True Blood series.)? Those are quick reads and a lot of fun. Oh- since you love Japan- The Tales of the Otori series is very good too.

  6. Wow, thanks for all the GREAT book recommendations! Obviously, I won't be able to hit on all these this week, but I'm definitely going to make a list and revisit at some point. I was planning on hitting up Janet Evanovich and her Stephanie Plum series or a Nicholas Sparks books I have sitting around. But I have to say that I've heard so many rave reviews about "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" that I may have to go with that. It's been on my library reserve list for at least a month, but I may have to break down and buy it. And that Olive Kittereridge book is sitting on my nightstand, so I may grab that too. Goodness, maybe I'll need to extend this challenge into 2 weeks!

  7. I just finished a book last week (it helped that I was on an airplane and didn't have homework!) but it was a very quick read. It was called "Still Alice" by Lisa Genova. It was a good read, and I'd definitely recommend it!

  8. One more that is more of a novella, so a shorter, easier read that I really enjoyed was Shop Girl. Who would have thought Steve Martin would be such a good writer! Sorry to comment twice. I've been trying to get more into book reading as well, and your post has inspired me!
