I love dogs.  I had a Great Dane when I was a kid, and Mr. Roller Coaster and I had a chocolate lab who died a few years ago.  I can’t imagine my kids growing up without a dog, but thanks to the craziness of military life, the time was never right to bring a puppy home.

But kind of like having a baby, the perfect time to buy a puppy doesn’t exist.  So Mr. Roller Coaster and I decided that this was as good a time as any, and before I knew it, we were calling a breeder to make arrangements for the cutest puppy in the whole wide world to join our family.

We kept the puppy a secret from the kids while we picked out a name and purchased doggy necessities.  Mr. RC and I were so excited, not only for ourselves, but for Big and Little C who have been begging us for a dog pretty much ever since our retriever died.  When Mr. RC left last week to pick the puppy up, I could hardly contain my excitement as I waited for the phone call that our newest baby was on its way home.

My heart broke as Mr. RC told me that the puppy we had lovingly chosen had been diagnosed with Parvo, a highly contagious and deadly virus.  He returned the puppy to the breeder, who immediately hospitalized the pup as well as several others in the litter.  I was devastated.  I had already fallen in love with this dog I had never even met.  And I was so disappointed that we’d have to start our puppy search all over again.

But Mr. RC never gave up hope and kept in contact with the breeder.  Although our puppy is still in the hospital, he’s responding to treatment.  The fact that he’s still alive is a very good sign.  It looks like we may still get our puppy after all!

So keep your fingers crossed for us and stay tuned for puppy pictures!

  1. That is very good news that he is still alive. I will keep my fingers crossed and say a prayer that it all works out.

Dogs are such a blessing to a family. Mine keep me sane… most of the time.

  2. OOoooh I want a great dane! It must have been great growing up with one.

I hope your puppy feels better soon and comes home! Good luck.

  3. Good luck with the puppy & I hope that the puppy does recover. I recently put a deposit down for a puppy that I fell in love with & then I kept questioning myself, like do I really have the lifestyle for a dog? We just got to Hawaii a couple weeks ago so we will be here for 3 years. I pick her up on Saturday & I feel like Im planning to bring a baby home, haha. She is only 8 weeks old so she should cure that "want to take care of a baby" feeling Im having. Good luck!

  4. Poor puppy! Oh my goodness. How devastating. I'm really happy to hear that the puppy is doing well and responding to the treatment. I hope he is able to come home with you guys soon!

  5. I hope all goes well! We have always rescued dogs and I always worry about kennel cough and everything else they can catch in shelters or foster homes. My fingers and toes will be crossed for your little guy in hopes that he can soon join your family!
