Military life is difficult to explain even to adults. Explaining it to children? Well, sometimes it’s impossible to find the right words.
Fortunately, there are people out there who seemed to have found the right words and then put those right words together in books that children of all ages can understand and relate to. In honor of the Month of the Military Child, I thought I’d share some of my favorite books for military brats. (Keep in mind that my children are ages 4 and 8 so the following are books that are appropriate for this age bracket or younger.)

We love Night Catch! I wish I had know about these other ones before the deployment, the kids would have enjoyed them. But good to keep in my back packet for the next one (gasp…just not too soon!).
LIKE! We are back on sea duty, and my oldest will be old enough to know what's going on, but not really have a good grasp of deployment. These books will be very much read by all of us- thank you for the recommendations!!

I know that this post is about books but I would also recommend the "With You All the Way" Deployment bear that comes with a DVD by the same name. My husband sent me one as a surprise because I love teddy bears and as I looked at all the neat stuff that comes with it I think it would help kids too! Lieutenant's Lady by Bess Streeter Aldrich. About the soldiers who protected the settlers from the Indians. A classic by a classic author.

The first portion of the book is my own memoir of being the daughter of an army artillery officer from my birth in 1938 (that's not a typo; I am that old) to his retirement when I was 20. The second portion of the book details why we are the way we are. Dennis Campbell of BratCon Radio has called this book, "A Field Manual for understanding military brats."
