***HONORABLE MENTIONS***
{The following are obviously more than short quotes, but I couldn’t resist including them in this post.}
The Silent Ranks
I wear no uniforms, no blues or greens.
But, I am in the military, in the ranks rarely seen.
I have no rank upon my shoulders. Salutes I do not give.
But in the military world is where I live.
I am not in the chain of command, orders I do not give or get.
But my husband is the one who does, this I can not forget.
I am not the one who fires a weapon, Who puts his life on the line.
But my job is just as tough, I’m the one who is always left behind.
My husband is a patriot, a brave and pride filled man.
And the call to serve his country not all can understand.
Behind the lines, I see things needed to keep this country free.
My husband makes the sacrifice, but so do my kids and me.
I love the man I married. The military is his life.
So I pledge to support my hero and stand among the silent ranks known as THE MILITARY WIFE.

  1. Even though it's not indigenous to military, I like the quote: If I have to put my big girl panties on one more time, the elastic is going to break then you're really going to see my ass!

    And

"Distance is not for the fearful, it is for the bold. It's for those who are willing to spend a lot of time alone in exchange for a little time with the one they love. It's for those knowing a good thing when they see it, even if they don't see it nearly enough."

  2. LOVE these! and @UnlikelyWife, I love the quote about distance.

Here are some of my favorites:

I wish you were here, but you're not here, you're there. And there doesn't know how lucky it is.

    She who waits serves too…

I can legally mess with government property 😉

Next time you look into a soldier's eyes…think of the one by his side, the one left behind, the encouragement in his life. The woman known as the military wife.

If there ever comes a day when we can't be together, keep me in your heart, I'll stay there forever – Winnie the Pooh

Behind this smile is a girl who is missing her soldier more than you will ever know.

Live today like he's deploying tomorrow.

True love is forever, even if it is in military time.

And of course, The Yellow Ribbon…this part is my favorite:
Around her hair, she wore a yellow ribbon
She wore it in the springtime
In the merry month of May
and if you ask her why the heck she wore it
She wore it for her soldier who was far, far away
    Far, far away
She wore it for her soldier
    Who was far, far away…

  3. I wrote this while my husband and I were separated while I finished college…it had been about a year and a half total, and I still had 5 months to go.

"A Prayer from Behind the Uniform"

    Dear God,

    As I lie here tonight,

I am touched by the depth of your grace.

    Feeling these arms around me,

And hearing the steady breathing beside me

Awakens me to the precious gift you’ve given me.

God, thank you for this beating heart,

    Beneath my chin,

    Lulling me to sleep.

    I know that each beat

Beats with a love for me

That only you and I can understand.

God, thank you for these rough, calloused hands,

    Perfectly enveloping my own.

I know that the marks they bear,

    They have borne for me.

God, thank you for the friends I’ve met along the way.

Thank you for them, for they understand my feelings.

They know that we did not sign up for this.

    No, we were signed up,

Signed up the day our love swore an oath to protect.

We wait, we hold our breaths, we cry

So that others don’t have to.

We go months without his touch,

We go months without falling asleep to that heartbeat.

We go months without feeling the softness of those rough hands.

Thank you for giving me the strength to wait,

To understand the amount of time spent together

    Does not define our love.

    Thank you for the uncertainty,

For it allows me to fully appreciate these moments.

Thank you for forcing me to do alone,

What most others have the privilege to do with someone else,

So that I may become stronger,

So that I may make my love as proud as he has made me.

God, give me the grace to see that this is not for everyone,

And that that makes me no better than anyone else,

    Just different.

Remind me that my struggle is unique,

One only to be shared with a select few,

And that even amongst those few,

    That each struggle is different,

    Each as painfully difficult,

Yet absolutely as worth it as the next.

Help me to never take these little moments for granted.

Thank you for the sacrifice he is making,

And for giving me the strength to make my own.

    This steady beating heart,

    It beats for you,

    It beats for me,

    It beats for us.

And for that, I am grateful.

    Amen

    • I cried too and I'm a police officer and at work! Grrr… All this hits too close to home, my Hubby deploys in two weeks 🙁 -Allie

A veteran lives here with his Commander In Chief.
    You had me at HOOAH.

  8. The good Lord was creating a model for military wives and was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared. She said, "Lord, you seem to be having a lot of trouble with this one. What's wrong with the standard model?"
The Lord replied, "Have you seen the spec on this order?" She has to be completely independent, posses the qualities of both father and mother, be a perfect hostess to four or forty with an hour's notice, run on black coffee, handle every emergency imaginable without a manual, be able to carry on cheerfully, even if she is pregnant and has the flu. She must be willing to move to a new location ten times in seventeen years. And oh, yes, she must have six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head, "Six pairs of hands? no way."
The Lord continued, "Don't worry, we will make other military wives to help her. And we will give her an unusually strong heart so it can swell with pride in her husband's achievements, sustain the pain of separations, beat soundly when it is overworked and tired, and be large enough to say "I understand" when she doesn't, and say "I love you" regardless.
"Lord," said the angel, touching his arm gently, "Go to bed and get some rest. You can finish tomorrow."
"I can't stop now," the Lord said, "I am so close to creating something unique. Already this model heals herself when she is sick, can put up six unexpected guests for the weekend, wave goodbye to her husband from a pier, a runway, or a depot, and understand why it's important that he leave."
The angel circled the model of the military wife, looked at it closely and sighed. "It looks fine, but it's so soft."
"She might look soft," replied the Lord, "but she has the strength of a lion. You would not believe what she can endure."
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her fingers across the cheek of the Lord's creation. "There's a leak," She announced. "Something is wrong with the construction. I am not surprised that it has cracked. You are trying to put too much into this model."
The Lord appeared offended at the angel's lack of confidence. "What you see is not a leak," he said. "It's a tear."
"A tear? What is it there for?" asked the angel.
The Lord replied, "It's for joy, sadness, pain, disappointment, loneliness, pride, and dedication to all the values that she and her husband hold dear."
"You are a genius!" exclaimed the angel. The Lord looked puzzled and replied. "I didn't put it there.

  9. Deff looove the Unlikely Wife post about distance. I have found to quotes that I really love:

A man that is good enough to shed his blood for his country is good enough to be given a square deal afterwards.

I found this one and it says it all.

I am a military girlfriend. I hold no formal recognition with the powers that be I am at the bottom of the chain. I hold no Military ID card; I am not a dependent or a parent. The man I love may face unspeakable dangers and I am at the mercy of those who possess this recognition for news. I understand this and accept this.

I have promised to be here for him upon his return no matter how long he is away. They may say I am insane for making such a commitment, but I hold onto our promises and have faith that he will come home safe. I know well that my love for him fuels him in the worst of times.

There is no ring on my finger to symbolize our commitment, though I love him no less for it. I hope every day that he will be able to call because a simple 30-second phone call can bring the greatest spectrum of emotions smiling with tears in my eyes from so much joy and pain. My relationship is based on a brief communication where I love you and I’m okay speaks more than volumes and gives me the strength to keep going.

I take mo moment spent together for granted. I hold onto every touch, caress, kiss, and every word. I have memorized the feel of his skin, his smell, the sound of his voice and I play it over and over in my mind so that I will not forget. I cry myself to sleep some nights because missing him hurts so badly, but wake up the next morning, brush myself off and start a new day.

    • @taylor
I really liked that, my boyfriend leaves tomorrow morning for basic and won't come home for 6 months and your post definatly made me smile. (:

    • My Fiance just left yesterday. But what helps is having friends to fet you throught it and

  14. My fave quote/saying is… I am a military wife. I get to legally mess with the governments property.

  15. I am going to be a military wife starting in September. We have a ceremony planned for next spring/summer when he gets home from his deployment. The reason we are having the actual marriage in September is because we want to be able to spend as much time together as possible and my morals are against living with someone before your married. So, being as he is in a diff. state from me(I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say what state–he's in the Special Forces) we are going to get married in September!

This coming deployment will be his 4th and it will be the 2nd that I've been with him during. Special Forces guys deploy much more than the other soliders. BUT their deployments are shorter so, I feel lucky. I'm so sorry for all of you who have husbands who are gone for over a year when I dont have to deal with any more than 6-7months. Anyways, thank you so much for this page! Its nice to read the funny quotes. 🙂

  16. My husband comes home in 53 days for a 3 week leave! I can't wait! My husband was in the Marine Corps from 04-08… and now he deploys privately now… and it will be 3 years at the end of March 2013 since he's gone privately to Iraq/A-stan… in 3 years we've seen each other not even 6 months total… people ask me how do I do it? i say how can I not? My husband means the world to me… we spend more time apart than together… if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be this strong! I know that one day… one day, it will all be worth it 🙂 SEMPER FI! <3 stay strong to all the military/contractor's spouses!!!!!

  17. My husband just left for his deployment yesterday. We have been married for only seven months and this was my first deployment as a military wife. It was the hardest day of my life and these quotes and poems and everything that has been posted on this blog has made me so proud of my husband and it is making this separation easier. Thank you everyone.

  18. I've only been.with my boyfriend 3 months, but he left yesterday for the first deployment since we've been together. I leave for college next week, so we were going to go long distance anyway, but 100 miles is very different to 2,500. I've never felt more incomplete as I do right now. I don't know if he'll be gone 30 days, or 190, but I pray he will be back with me soon. part of me wanted more warning than the 2 days we had, but I doubt it would have made him leaving any easier.

  19. I wrote this poem myself & it is on my fb page

    American Soldier 12/30/11

He speaks of death with all his words thinking that he can’t conquer the mission of War

Negative thoughts stuck in his mind thinking he has so little time than before

He is out in the field waiting for the battle and knowing that there is a chance of no survival

Fire Fire, here comes the attack, fighting for his life and there’s no turning back

Then a sound of a fallen comrade stings his ears with a heart breaking sound

That brings him to tears; the thoughts in his head are now turned around

In the back on his mind he visions his wife and child, he will return home

Thinking that he can conquer and will defeat the enemy straight to the ground

He will never quit, he will always stand, and will kill the other man

He is a warrior and a member of a team, he will not turn them down

In the field of battle, blood on his boots, dodging the rounds that the enemy shoots

Months go by and day by day thinking the same damn way but a different day

The pain and suffering finally ends and today is the day we all can mend

Sent back home to his family with a sign of relief, the War is over. The mission is complete.

Now with a different look on life and optimism he is stronger than ever

He thought to himself and says loud and proud, “I am an American Soldier".

  20. I love the yellow ribbon one when my husband was in basic he sent me a letter with that written in it and said it reminded him of me because yellow is my favorite color. Now he sings it to our son and he loves it always quiets him down. Lol. 🙂

  21. Thank you for these posts. I've only been with HIM for a couple months and he's leaving in just a few weeks…and I cannot be there with him because I live in Europe! It is hard, I can't sleep, I can't eat, I check my email thousand times a day … but I believe we can make it, I want to make it because he is worth it! And blogs like this one make me keep on going, I am so glad to know I am not alone. I just wish I could be as strong as you all are …

  22. I've been a military dependent all my live – first as a daughter then as a wife. My hubby retired just over a year ago after 24 years of service, 11 deployments, and 6 PCS moves. I will always remember what it was like when he deployed.

My personal favorite saying/quote will always be "Who are you calling dependent?"

  23. I love these quotes! Even scrolling down through the comments I found a bunch I love. I wish I knew who wrote some of those so I can quote them. I was a military daughter and now I am a proud military wife. I make military couple and deployment jewelry and I would LOVE to incorporate some of these quotes but I do not know who to give the credit to!

  24. I love love love these quotes!
I was an army daughter and now I am an army wife! I just recently started making military couple and deployment jewelry and I would love to incorporate some of these quotes but I am not sure who to give the credit to!

  25. i am also a military wife (Philippine Army) im so touched with that lovely qoutes. i also love this qoute regarding soldier boots "They look ordinary, they lace up just the same, but it's not the boots that matters, it's my soldier in the boots that means the world to me."
